Perhaps the least talked about part of the spectrum, the different black pigments have inherent qualities which are none-the-less very important to the discerning artist.
Our original release of 40 oil colours contained only one black, Mars Black, so as to make way for more colour in a limited range. Mars Black, black iron oxide, is denser than bone, vine or ivory blacks but also warmer than the cool lamp or carbon blacks and so was the obvious choice. It is arguably more versatile and definitely faster drying than Carbon Black, but will not absorb as much light and therefore displays a different tone compared to the carbon blacks.
With the addition of 16 new colours in 2014 we saw the opportunity to expand our choice by adding the super strong and intense Carbon Black. Its fine pigment particles ensure a high tinting strength and cleaner secondary mixes.
